new study demonstrates sharp increase of stupidity in academia

A new study, brought to us courtesy of the Australian Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine, is taking Hollywood to task for not depicting safe sex or the negative aspects of drug use. Their study methods, of course, meet only the strictest academic standards. First, they took the list of the highest grossing movies of all time from that respected scholarly enterprise The Internet Movie Database. From this, they culled all movies made before 1983. They picked this date because that was when AIDS was first widely publicized, and after that, apparently, Hollywood should have known better. They then eliminated all cartoons, movies about animals, all G and PG rated movies, and watched what was left, toting up the sex and drug scenes, taking especial note of references to birth control (one), or negative repercussions of sexual acts or drug taking (none). They seemed not to pay much attention to the fact that of the 87 movies they reviewed, only 28 contained any sex scenes at all, which kind of makes you wonder about all those claims about Hollywood movies being a hotbed of permissiveness.
