Lil Wayne featuring Eminem—”Drop the World”
#18
Unbelievable. The lyrics sound like a Junior High student trying to sound tough and “realistic” (that is, cynical and negative by rote), the music an overblown attempt to accompany a melody that doesn’t exist. Eminem fares better, since he at least understands the form—which Lil Wayne obviously doesn’t—and knows how to pull some interesting rhythmic change-ups within it. But his lyrics aren’t much better than Lil Wayne’s, and no one could save a record as conceptually misguided as this, anyway. Lil Wayne seems to have reached that unfortunate point faced by so many great talents, at which they begin to believe that anything they touch will be marked by genius. Chances are he’ll recover; but will we?
