The big news this week, as is obvious to everyone with ears, isn't the arrival of the Akon mentored Kardinall Offishall in the top ten, but the totally unexpected appearance of M.I.A.'s "Paper Planes" at 55 in the Hot 100. If it hadn't been for "Pushin' Me Away" the latest in the Jonas Brothers' string of LP teasers (and the best thing I've heard from them so far), she would have had the top debut of the week--with a song that was released as a single last December, off an album that's nearly a year old. The immediate impetus is the song's inclusion on the soundtrack of the new fratboy-drugdealing comedy Pineapple Express. If the song's appearance in the trailer can get it into iTunes' top twenty, what will happen when the movie is released and the soundtrack comes out (some interesting speculation about the movie's core audience can be found in Chris Molanphy's 100 and Single column on Idolator)?
Aside from M.I.A. and the Jonases, the only other interesting debut this week is Jazmine Sullivan's "Need U Bad", produced by Missy Elliot. It's not a great record, but I don't think anyone's ever put old school dub on the Hot 100 before. Sounds as good as ever.
