But is that any different than it's been for the last decade or so? The only difference from the way things were five years ago is that now everybody's connecting with DJs like Diplo and Guetta and Harris instead of hip-hop producers like Timbaland or Pharrell or Tricky Stewart. Or, for that matter, the featured rappers woould cycle through the charts, from Ludacris through T-Pain to Lil Wayne and Minaj. People, even established artists, have always cashed in on trends, but with the way the business is set up now, it's easier to get a chunk of the real thing rather than an imitation.

Hi! Thanks for the mention, hope it's OK for me to post here.

My view on the pop landscape's not all that grim -- "Climax" is going to be in my top ten songs of the year barring an onslaught of amazing tracks in the last two quarters, stretches of Roman Reloaded are downright astonishing (sadly, they're rarely stretches that last entire songs).

A lot of this seems arbitrary, though, or externally imposed -- as plausible as it is that everyone suddenly discovered they loved, say, David Guetta or learning to rap at the same time, (actually, it's really plausible now...), it just doesn't seem true, particularly when the results are too often too predictable. At this point it's almost a given that any major pop release will have a Diplo song that sounds like a Diplo song, something that Rihanna probably turned down, etc., so forth....

Is it not supposed to be funny? I mean, it's not hilarious, but it's amusing enough. I never need to hear it again, but I'd rather hear people singing about food than sex.

Ran out of time. I fell so far behind on the Hot 100 at one point, and so many bubbling under records hit the big chart anyway that it didn't seem worth the trouble. I've dabbled with the idea of doing a monthly summary, featuring only records that don't make the Hot 100 by artists who aren't well known. I'll have to think about that some more, but I would like to give it some coverage again.
